Microdermabrasion Machine is a popular skincare technique that rejuvenates the skin by removing the outermost layer of dead skin cells. This non-invasive procedure uses a device equipped with an abrasive surface to gently sand away the thick outer layer of the skin, promoting the growth of new, healthier skin cells. The benefits of microdermabrasion machines are numerous: They enhance skin texture and tone, reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and sun damage, and can help diminish visible pores and acne scars.

A Professional microdermabrasion machine at home offers the convenience of performing this effective treatment in the comfort of your own space. It provides a cost-effective alternative to frequent professional visits, allowing for regular use that can lead to more sustained improvements in skin health. Home devices are designed to be user-friendly and safe, making it easier for individuals to maintain their skin’s vitality and smoothness without needing a dermatologist’s appointment.

What is a Microdermabrasion Machine?

Microdermabrasion machines are skincare devices designed to exfoliate or polish the skin using mechanical means. They typically utilize tiny crystals or a diamond-tipped wand to gently remove the outer layer of dead skin cells, revealing the softer, more radiant skin underneath. This process rejuvenates the skin and promotes the production of new cells in the dermis’s basal (deepest) layer. It can improve skin texture and tone, reduce the appearance of scars, and help alleviate sun damage and fine lines.

Technology Behind Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion machines work on a simple principle: abrasion and suction. Here’s how the two leading technologies function:

Crystal Microdermabrasion: This traditional form uses a hand-held device that emits fine crystals, such as aluminum oxide or sodium bicarbonate, across the skin’s surface. As the crystals irritate the skin, an attached vacuum sucks up the used crystals and skin debris.

Diamond Microdermabrasion: This newer method involves a wand with a tip covered in tiny diamonds. This tip is moved across the skin to perform exfoliation. The diamonds irritate the skin, and like crystal microdermabrasion, a vacuum sucks away the debris. Diamond microdermabrasion is generally considered less messy than its crystal counterpart and allows for more precision and control, particularly around sensitive areas.

Types of Microdermabrasion Machines

Microdermabrasion machines come in two main types:

Professional and at-home devices.

Professional Microdermabrasion Machines
Microdermabrasion Machines

Professional Microdermabrasion Machines are typically found in dermatologists’ offices and high-end spas. They are more powerful and can penetrate deeper into the skin’s surface. Professional machines often offer a range of settings that can be adjusted according to the patient’s skin type and the desired strength of the treatment. These machines are operated by trained professionals, ensuring the treatment is safe and effective.

At-Home Microdermabrasion Machines

At-Home Microdermabrasion Machines: These devices are designed for personal use and tend to be smaller, less powerful, and more affordable than professional models. They provide a convenient and cost-effective way to achieve similar results to professional treatments, albeit slower and less intense. At-home machines are perfect for regular maintenance between professional sessions or for individuals looking to start their skin health regimen without the higher cost of in-office treatments.

Benefits of Using a Microdermabrasion Machine

Microdermabrasion machines offer a range of benefits that contribute significantly to skin health and aesthetics. Here’s a detailed look at the advantages of incorporating this technology into your skincare regimen:

1. Improved Skin Texture and Tone

Microdermabrasion provides a deeper, more intensive exfoliation than traditional scrubs and cleansers. By removing the outermost layer of dead skin cells, these machines reveal smoother, more even-toned skin underneath. Regular treatments can help minimize the appearance of pores and leave the skin looking refreshed and revitalized.

2. Reduction of Scars

One of the most compelling uses of microdermabrasion is its ability to reduce the visibility of scars, particularly those caused by acne. The process stimulates the skin to produce new collagen and elastin, which can help to fill in pitted scars and make them less noticeable. While deeper scars may require professional treatment, many users see significant improvements in the texture and appearance of scarred areas after consistent home use.

3. Removal of Dead Skin Cells

Microdermabrasion is highly effective at clearing away dead skin cells that can lead to a dull complexion and clogged pores. This improves the skin’s appearance and enhances its absorption of skincare products. After treatment, moisturizers, serums, and other treatments penetrate deeper into the skin, making them more effective.

4. Reduction in Hyperpigmentation

Sun exposure, hormonal changes, and certain skin disorders can cause dark spots and uneven skin coloring, known as hyperpigmentation. Microdermabrasion helps to lighten these pigmentation marks by removing the top layer of skin and promoting the generation of new, healthy skin cells.

5. Minimized Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Although microdermabrasion isn’t a replacement for more intensive procedures like fillers or botox, it can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and early wrinkles. Regular use can improve skin elasticity and texture, diminishing the visibility of age-related skin changes.

How to Choose the Right Microdermabrasion Machine

Choosing the suitable microdermabrasion machine involves several factors that cater to your specific skin needs, budget, and desired features. Here’s a guide to help you select a machine perfect for your at-home skincare routine.

1. Consider Your Skin Type

  • Sensitive Skin: Look for machines with adjustable suction settings to prevent skin irritation.
  • Oily and Acne-Prone Skin: Opt for devices with both exfoliation and suction capabilities to clear out pores effectively.
  • Mature Skin: Seek out devices that promote collagen production and have attachments for fine lines and wrinkles.

2. Key Features to Look For

  • Suction Power: Adjustable suction levels allow for a customizable experience that can suit various skin types and conditions.
  • Tip Varieties: Some machines come with different types of exfoliating tips (coarse, fine, etc.), which are crucial for treating other areas of the face and body.
  • Hygiene: Consider how easy it is to clean and replace the filters and tips, as hygiene significantly prevents skin issues.
  • Portability: A compact, lightweight model might be best if you travel often.

3. Price Consideration

  • Professional Microdermabrasion machines can range from $50 for basic models to over $4999 for advanced units with more features. Determine your budget first, and consider machines that offer the best value within your price range.
  • Investing in a higher-priced model could be more cost-effective, especially if it delivers salon-quality results and reduces the need for professional treatments.

4. Comparison of Top Models

  • Entry-Level: Neutrogena Microdermabrasion System — An affordable choice for beginners, with single-use puffs and a gentle system suitable for all skin types.
  • Mid-Range: Microderm GLO Mini—This portable device offers safe, time-efficient treatment with dual-speed settings and a range of tips for different skin concerns.
  • High-End: PMD Personal Microderm Pro — Features a wide range of discs for varying skin sensitivities and depths, which is excellent for targeted treatments and regular use for all skin types.

5. Customer Reviews and After-Sales Service

  • Always check customer reviews to gauge the machine’s efficacy and reliability. Reviews can provide real-life insights into how the machine works for different skin types and issues.
  • If you encounter device issues, ensure that the company offers exemplary after-sales service, including warranties and customer support.

How to Use a Microdermabrasion Machine

Microdermabrasion is a popular skincare technique to renew overall skin tone and texture. It can improve the appearance of sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, acne scarring, melasma, and other skin-related concerns and conditions. Using a microdermabrasion machine at home can seem daunting at first. Still, with the proper steps and precautions, it can be a safe and effective way to achieve professional-level results. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use a microdermabrasion machine, followed by tips for aftercare:

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Preparation
    • Cleanse your skin: Before using the machine, thoroughly cleanse your skin to remove any makeup, dirt, or oils. This ensures that the microdermabrasion is practical and prevents any potential infections.
    • Read the manual: Familiarize yourself with your specific model’s manual, as each machine can have slightly different instructions and features.
  2. Using the Machine
    • Test the machine: Before applying it to your face, test the machine on a small area of your skin, such as your arm, to make sure the intensity is comfortable.
    • Select the appropriate tip: Most machines have different tips or heads for different skin areas and types. Choose the one that suits your needs.
    • Adjust the settings: Start with the lowest setting to see how your skin reacts, and gradually increase the intensity as needed.
    • Move the machine around your skin: Gently move the device across your skin using smooth, even strokes. Avoid sensitive areas around the eyes; do not go over the same area multiple times.
  3. Post-Treatment
    • Rinse your skin: After treatment, gently rinse your skin with lukewarm water to remove any remaining dead skin cells.
    • Apply moisturizer: Immediately apply a hydrating moisturizer to help soothe the skin and prevent dryness.
    • Clean the machine: Thoroughly clean any parts of the machine that come in contact with your skin, following the manufacturer’s guidelines.

Aftercare Tips

  1. Moisturize regularly: It is crucial to keep your skin hydrated after microdermabrasion. Use a gentle, non-comedogenic moisturizer to help repair the skin barrier and lock in moisture.
  2. Use sunscreen: After the treatment, your skin will be more sensitive to the sun, so apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher daily, even if it’s cloudy.
  3. Avoid harsh products: For at least one week after treatment, avoid using products with irritating ingredients such as retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), or perfumes.
  4. Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps your skin heal and maintains elasticity and suppleness.
  5. Monitor your skin: In the days following treatment, pay attention to how your skin responds. If you notice excessive redness, swelling, or signs of infection, consult a dermatologist.

By following these steps and aftercare tips, you can maximize the benefits of your microdermabrasion treatment and maintain healthy, glowing skin. Always handle the device carefully and respect your skin’s limits to prevent adverse effects.

Common Mistakes to Avoid with Home Microdermabrasion Machines

Microdermabrasion can significantly enhance your skincare regimen, but when using a home microdermabrasion machine, there are several common pitfalls to avoid. Ensuring you’re aware of these can help you maximize the benefits while minimizing any potential harm to your skin. Here are the critical mistakes to watch out for:

1. Overusing the microdermabrasion machine

  • Mistake: Using the professional microdermabrasion machine too frequently can lead to skin irritation, redness, and sensitivity. If not used moderately, it can strip away healthy skin layers.
  • Advice: Follow the recommended frequency guidelines provided with your device—typically, once a week is sufficient for most skin types. Allow your skin time to recover between sessions to promote healthy cell regeneration.

2. Using Incorrect Attachments or Settings

  • Mistake: Different skin types require different abrasion levels. Using a setting that is too harsh or has the wrong attachment can cause abrasions or bruising.
  • Advice: Start with the lowest setting and use the appropriate attachment for your skin type. Gradually increase intensity as your skin adapts to the treatment.

3. Skipping Pre and Post-Treatment Care

  • Mistake: Not preparing the skin before use or neglecting aftercare can reduce the effectiveness of microdermabrasion and increase the risk of adverse reactions.
  • Advice: Always thoroughly cleanse your skin before use and avoid irritating substances. After treatment, apply a gentle moisturizer and sunscreen to protect the newly exposed skin layers from environmental damage and to hydrate the skin.

4. Applying Too Much Pressure

  • Mistake: Pressing the device too hard against the skin can lead to scratches and sore spots, which may cause scarring.
  • Advice: Let the machine glide gently over your skin. The suction and movement of the device should provide enough action to exfoliate effectively.

5. Ignoring Contraindications

  • Mistake: Using a professional microdermabrasion machine on active acne, eczema, or other skin conditions can worsen these issues.
  • Advice: Consult with a dermatologist before starting treatments if you have any ongoing skin conditions or are unsure about your skin type’s compatibility with microdermabrasion.

6. Neglecting Machine Maintenance

  • Mistake: Not cleaning the device after each use can lead to bacterial buildup, which can cause breakouts or infections.
  • Advice: Clean all machine parts that come in contact with your skin according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Regular maintenance ensures the device’s longevity and your skin’s safety.

7. Using on Damp Skin

  • Mistake: Operating the machine on wet skin can pull and tug at the skin, potentially leading to loss of elasticity and irritation.
  • Advice: Ensure your skin is completely dry before using the microdermabrasion machine. Dry skin allows for more uniform abrasion and prevents pulling.

By avoiding these common errors, you can enjoy the full benefits of your home microdermabrasion machine safely and effectively. Consistency and correct usage are crucial to achieving and maintaining beautiful, healthy skin.

  1. I’m an esthetician & looking for a crystal/diamond tip microderm machine that isn’t $5k+! I read the reviews on this machine & was impressed reading that a “professional” Esti using it in her business, gave it 5 stars. WOW! Not sure what she was thinking! There’s no suction w/this machine. Not for professional use in my opinion ~ I’m used to much more range of suction. The wand wasn’t made well. Disappointed!

Since my original review, MacroDerm refunded my original purchase (pleasantly surprised) & sent me a replacement machine @ no additional cost. WHO DOES THAT! Impressed w/the CS ~ for sure! The 2nd machine has better suction & the handheld wand is also made better. After putting it together (instructions could be a little more clear), I tried/tested out the suction on my arm & it’s better than the 1st machine. I haven’t used it on a client but will be soon. If you’re a professional Esti starting out, on a budget & have been looking for a duo diamond tip/crystal microdem machine, give this one a shot. I think you’ll be very pleased w/the machine & DEFINITELY w/the CS. They really want their customers satisfied! 🙂
